Who You Can Sponsor

1. Your Own Parents and Grandparents:

  • This includes biological or adopted parents and grandparents.
  • Both your parents or grandparents can be included in the same application if they are married or in a common-law relationship.

2. Dependent Children of Your Parents and Grandparents:

  • This includes your siblings, half-siblings, or step-siblings, and their dependent children.

Current Spouse or Partner of Divorced Parents:

  • If your parents or grandparents are divorced, you can sponsor their current spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner.
  • You must submit a separate application for each divorced parent.

Separated but Not Divorced Parents or Grandparents:

  • If they are separated but not legally divorced, you need to submit one application for both, as they are still considered married.

Who You Can’t Sponsor

  1. Spouse or Common-Law Partner’s Parents and Grandparents:
    • You cannot sponsor your spouse or common-law partner’s parents or grandparents (your in-laws).
    • However, if your spouse or partner receives their own invitation to apply, you can be a co-signer on their application.
  2. Inadmissible Individuals:
    • You cannot sponsor anyone who is inadmissible to Canada due to reasons such as criminal records or health issues.

How To Proceed

To apply through Express Entry, you must create an online candidate profile. This profile stays active in the candidate pool for up to one year unless you are selected. You can update your profile at any time during this period—for instance, if you’ve earned a new diploma or improved your IELTS scores. Note that your CRS score will automatically adjust with age, potentially decreasing on your birthday according to the age points chart.

If you do not have a secured job offer, it is recommended to register with the Canada Job Bank. Promoting yourself to potential employers can significantly increase your chances of receiving a job offer and, in turn, a higher CRS score.

Express Entry draws typically occur every few weeks. If selected, you will receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Residence and have 60 days to submit all required documents and information.

The processing time by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is usually around six months, though this may vary depending on application volume and case complexity.
